1927 Martin 0-28K

With its figured koa body, herringbone Style 28 trim, attractive wooden purflings, and beautiful conversion to Spanish style from its original Hawaiian set-up, this 1927 Martin 0-28K is easy to fall head over heels for! It's a gorgeous guitar, it plays better than most brand-new guitars, and has the dry and slightly bright, open, and woody tone that defines these lightly built all-koa Martins.

The guitar was fairly recently converted from its original Hawaiian set up by TJ Thompson. The work is professionally done and the guitar is indistinguishable from a factory-Spanish original but for its lack of side dots. The bridge is an aged accurate reproduction built with a little bit of compensation to the saddle slot, the bar frets are new, and the nut and saddle are aged bone reproductions made and installed here. Playability is excellent; the guitar is set up with 12-52 strings and has an action of 5-6 64ths. The frets are radiused to 20”.

The guitar is in excellent condition. There are no top or back cracks, and just a single 1” long side crack that’s near the waist on the bass side of the body. There’s a small and mostly indistinguishable puncture repair on the same side, about 2” away from the neck heel. We’ve highlighted it in the provided photos. The finish is entirely original and has developed a lovely antiqued patina that’s never been buffed, polished, or heavily cleaned away. The engraved Waverly tuners are original, as are 5 of the 6 bridgepins and the endpin. Original bridgeplate, and all bracing is intact and unrepaired. A few loose back brace ends have been cleanly reglued in our shop. You'll find some playwear to the top where a pickguard would otherwise have been and an assortment of dings and dents, including a semi-circular indentation at the base of the heel.

Rounded V neck carve with a full feel, 24.9” scale, 2-3/8” string spread at the saddle, and a nut width that’s a touch shy of 1-7/8".
