1958 Gretsch 6121 Chet Atkins Solidbody

The Gretsch 6121 Chet Atkins Solidbody was released alongside the 6120 Hollowbody at the start of 1955. By early 1958 the 6121 had lost its cows and cactuses, tooled leather sides, and Melita bridge, but gained a pair of humbucking Filter’Trons, a bar bridge, and ‘humptop’ inlays in its bound rosewood fretboard. It would undergo a few more design changes before being phased out of production sometime in 1963.

This example is jaw-dropping gorgeous, 100% complete, and in factory original condition. Its frets and finish show minimal playwear, the pickguard and pickup rings are crack-free, the solder is untouched, and the neck angle is excellent. The guitar works perfectly and plays relatively cleanly with its original Gretsch fretwork. The neck has a comfortable D carve with a nut width that’s a bit shy of 1-11/16” and a 1st fret thickness of .825”. It weighs in at 7-3/4 lbs.

The first-generation Filter’Tron pickups predate PAF coverplates and measure 4.0 and 4.1 kOhms, and the guitar sounds heavenly. The pickups are clear and balanced, nicely rounded, and bright enough to make a single-coil player happy, but still offer the creamy warmth of old humbuckers.

A wonderful example of one of Gretsch’s rarer models.
