David Wren needs no introduction to most Canadian guitarists or guitar builders; his impact on the Canadian guitar landscape has been profoundly shaped through his years; first, as one of Jean Larrivée’s early employees alongside Grit Laskin, Linda Manzer, and their particular Group of Seven; next, as co-owner of Toronto’s 12th Fret; and now, as reinspired guitar maker and active supporter of the next generation of this country’s finest luthiers. On a personal note, I have Dave to thank for NOT hiring a much younger and greener version of me (Mark) back in 1998 to work at the Fret. There would be no Folkway Music today if that meeting went differently.
This Studio model was built in 1981. The Studio line was a simply appointed (and therefor less expensive) line of instruments that David Wren was offering during the leanest years of acoustic guitar sales in the early 1980s. Built of mahogany and Sitka spruce, the guitar was trimmed in plain maple bindings and adorned with simple inlays and rosette, but with no compromise in its build, feel, or tone. Forty-three years on, it has matured into an exceptional sounding 16” guitar with a gorgeous low register, full mids and pretty trebles with a touch of sparkle. In Larrivée-Speak, you might call this an L-05, but Wren guitars are built a fair bit more lightly than his teacher’s and offer a tone that has evolved significantly from that leave-point.
The guitar is in excellent condition and was built to withstand Canadian seasonality. It is crack-free and shows no repairs other than a cleanly executed neck reset, and more recent refret by our shop. It is fitted with an LR Baggs Ribbon Transducer System pickup that still sounds best-in-class, and is set up with 12s and our shop standard 5-6 action. There is playwear on the back of the neck, light buckle wear on the back, and light strumming wear by the soundhole. It’s otherwise quite tidy for a guitar of its age.
C-shaped neck with 1-3/4” nutwidth and 1st fret depth of .793”. 25.6” scale, 2-1/8” spacing at the bridge, .938” neck thickness at the 9th fret.
With hardshell case.
