A very unique creation built by Martin’s Custom Shop about eight years back, this OM-scale 000 features straight grained Cambodian Rosewood back and sides and a VTS-processed high altitude Swiss Spruce bearclaw-figured top with forward positioned Sitka scalloped X bracing. The body is bound in walnut and features herringbone top trim, multi-layered wooden purflings, zigzag back strip and a distinctive inlaid walnut rosette. The guitar’s neck is a three-piece lamination of mahogany and walnut with a Modified Low Oval carve, ebony fretboard, and 1-3/4” nut. Bone nut and saddle, 2-1/4” string spacing at the bridge, and vintage-style tuning machines are well thought out finishing touches.

Despite what this guitar’s appearance might suggest, under the hood it’s 100% traditional Martin, with the same X bracing layout that the company’s standard series OMs feature. The Cambodian rosewood and European spruce top are sonically akin to Madagascar rosewood and Adirondack spruce, so this guitar can be thought of as something like an OM-28 Marquis with different appointments. It’s a dry and forward sounding guitar with plenty of headroom, excellent note separation, bass power, and a little bit of sparkle on top, and it’s an excellent fingerstyle guitar or flat-picker.

In near-mint condition and perfectly set up, this Custom Shop Martin OM presents and plays beautifully.
