Gibson F-5 mandolins were built in very small numbers through the 1950s – about twenty per year – as high end mandolins weren’t in great demand in those years. This example sports a 1951 serial number and is one of 22 built that year.
Carved Sitka top with tone bar bracing, figured maple back and sides, mahogany neck with bound ebony fretboard, pearl logo, flowerpot, and block inlays. Sunburst lacquer finish, 5-ply pickguard, gold hardware, and modern Randy Wood adjustable bridge.
We don’t have much history on this mandolin as it was purchased by its most recent owner over 30 years ago. It appears to have been refinished some decades back; the neck’s barrel’s finish was since removed for a smooth feel but the remainder of the lacquer remains in nice shape overall. The Kluson tuning machines might date from a bit later in the 1950s, but the clamshell tailpiece is original 1950s F5 spec. The instrument is crack-free and remains in excellent condition, with a good neck angle and no top sinkage. The fretboard extension has been scooped, the frets are replacements that play well, and the bone nut is quite likely a replacement as well.
V-shaped neck with a nut width that’s a hair wider than 1-1/8”. 13-7/8” scale. Powerful and quite balanced tone with a full and thicker presence through the low-mids.
With original brown and pink hardshell case.
