An early OME XXX Tenor banjo that has been very-well cared for throughout its life. It has a few very minor dings on the neck and resonator, but very little playwear to speak of. It is wonderfully set up, with excellent playability.

11″ multi-ply maple rim with no-hole flat-head tone ring, 24 brackets, double coordinator rod, and two-piece flange. Bound Walnut 2-ring resonator, walnut neck with bound ebony fingerboard with 19 frets and pearl inlays, OME tailpiece and armrest, 5/8″ bridge. Five Star planetary tuners, 1-1/8″ nut, and 22-3/16” scale. Set-up in shop, the banjo plays cleanly and easily. It’s nicely bright and quite loud and is perfectly suited for flatpicking.

This OME XXX Tenor comes with its original hardshell case.

David Wren needs no introduction to most Canadian guitarists or guitar builders; his impact on the Canadian guitar landscape has been profoundly shaped through his years; first, as one of Jean Larrivée’s early employees alongside Grit Laskin, Linda Manzer, and their particular Group of Seven; next, as co-owner of Toronto’s 12th Fret; and now, as reinspired guitar maker and active supporter of the next generation of this country’s finest luthiers. On a personal note, I have Dave to thank for NOT hiring a much younger and greener version of me (Mark) back in 1998 to work at the Fret. There would be no Folkway Music today if that meeting went differently.

This Studio model was built in 1981. The Studio line was a simply appointed (and therefor less expensive) line of instruments that David Wren was offering during the leanest years of acoustic guitar sales in the early 1980s. Built of mahogany and Sitka spruce, the guitar was trimmed in plain maple bindings and adorned with simple inlays and rosette, but with no compromise in its build, feel, or tone. Forty-three years on, it has matured into an exceptional sounding 16” guitar with a gorgeous low register, full mids and pretty trebles with a touch of sparkle. In Larrivée-Speak, you might call this an L-05, but Wren guitars are built a fair bit more lightly than his teacher’s and offer a tone that has evolved significantly from that leave-point.

The guitar is in excellent condition and was built to withstand Canadian seasonality. It is crack-free and shows no repairs other than a cleanly executed neck reset, and more recent refret by our shop. It is fitted with an LR Baggs Ribbon Transducer System pickup that still sounds best-in-class, and is set up with 12s and our shop standard 5-6 action. There is playwear on the back of the neck, light buckle wear on the back, and light strumming wear by the soundhole. It’s otherwise quite tidy for a guitar of its age.

C-shaped neck with 1-3/4” nutwidth and 1st fret depth of .793”. 25.6” scale, 2-1/8” spacing at the bridge, .938” neck thickness at the 9th fret.

With hardshell case.

A deep-bodied Padauk and Sitka Beneteau OM that remains in near-new condition despite being 30 years old. Its voice has developed beautifully and offers the warmth, overtone richness, and nuanced subtlety that is distinctive of an older instrument. With sides that taper from 4-5/16 to 4” this 1994 Marc Beneteau OM’s increased air volume guarantees an increase in low-end presence and warmth without sacrificing the pretty upper-mid-range than an OM is famous for.

This 1994 Marc Beneteau features scalloped X braces coupled with straight tone bars, maple bridge plate, small ebony bridge, and 25.4” scale. Wooden bindings, purflings and rosette, clear pickguard, one-piece mahogany neck with bound ebony fretboard. Gotoh tuners, bone nut and saddle.

The neck has a round carve not unlike a that of a 50’s Gibson. The nut width is 1-11/16” and the neck depth at the 1st fret is .835. The neck thickness at the 9th fret is .935”, which is more modern than vintage in feel and will surely be appreciated by most fingerstyle players. String spacing at the bridge is 2-1/8. We’ve set the guitar up with 12-53 strings and an action of 4-6 64ths.

About this 2008 Gibson Custom Les Paul R8 1958 Reissue

With its faded sunburst finish and plain maple top, fat neck carve, and hot Burstbucker pickups this Les Paul R8 by Gibson’s Custom Shop is a great recreation of a first-year ‘Burst’. This example is in great shape and plays well, with original frets that don’t show much use. It’s been set-up in shop with 10/46 strings.

The neck has a deep C carve, 1-11/16” nutwidth, and a depth of .906” at the 1st fret. 12th fret neck depth is 1.0”, and the scale is 24.75”. The pickups measure 7.6k and 8.1k, and the guitar weighs in at 9.75 lbs.

Apart from a replacement chrome jack plate the guitar is totally original. It’s in very clean shape overall but does show light belt wear on the back, and an area of worn finish on the neck heel that has been touched up. We can’t explain the reason for this finish damage (there’s no structural damage at all), and don’t have any great theories to offer. It’s mostly negligible, and if you’re not troubled by it, you’ll happily pocket about 10% of the value of an R8 because of it.

With original hardshell case, COA, and hangtags.

With Cherry Red gloss lacquer finish, black plastic accents and shiny nickel hardware, this Memphis Gibson ES-339 offers some serious style to match its tone. The Gibson ES-339 quickly became a favorite in the semi-hollow Gibson line after its introduction in 2007 thanks to its small size and fabulous 335-meets-Les Paul tone. The Gibson Classic ’57 Pickups are a perfect match to the body design.

This example is in excellent condition and has been set up here at Folkway. Playability is perfect, with frets that show very light wear. No repairs or changes. Very light handling wear throughout.

Kluson tuners, 1-11/16” nut, 24.75” scale, bound dark rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays. Neck thickness is .856” at the 1st fret and .920” at the 12th. 6.7 lbs.
