Folkway Music in Guelph, Ontario Canada

BUILT ON PASSION

The Story of Folkway

Established in 1999, Folkway Music was founded by Mark Stutman as a guitar-building and repair shop. Shortly after opening, Mark became an authorized repairperson for C.F. Martin & Co., and it wasn’t long before the demand for his customer-focused, high-quality repair work exceeded what he could handle alone. By 2001, Folkway Music employed a staff of three and was already deeply immersed in the world of vintage instrument sales.

    Mark Stutman

Mark is Folkway Music’s founder, owner, and senior instrument restoration specialist. With a deep love for vintage acoustic guitars and a passion for detail, he has become one of the most educated and well-respected names in today’s vintage guitar industry. Mark has an encyclopaedic knowledge of vintage Gibson and Martin acoustics and has spent the better part of thirty years refining his skills in vintage acoustic guitar restoration. The son of an audiophile and a designer, Mark was raised with a keen ear for tone and an exacting eye, both of which form the fundamentals of his guitar restoration philosophy. He loves the idiosyncrasies of vintage Gibson guitar construction, and can often be found at his repair bench comparing instruments from the 1930s. His current favourite instruments are his 1933 Gibson L-00, ’49 Gibson LG-2, and his factory-lefty 1966 Martin GT-70 electric, which he plays through a 1960 Gibson GA-20T most of the time.

Mike has been Folkway’s Sales Manager since 2020. Before that, he was a long-time friend and client who’s main acoustic was a mid-1960’s Gibson J-50, which he chose from our inventory some fifteen years back. He’s now added a 1940s Gibson-Made KG-21 Archtop, newly discontinued Martin 0-18 and 50s Harmony Tenor guitar to his arsenal. A gifted musician and music educator who is as proficient behind a drum kit as he is a guitar, Mike is also half of the Canadian Folk Music Award-nominated duo Twas Now.

Since joining Folkway in 2018, Dave has become an integral part of our repair machine, tackling some of the shop's trickiest restorations and complex technical challenges. Beyond his precision bench work, he is responsible for managing the shop’s workflow and organization, while covering the majority of client and repair-shop communications.

    Nathan Schiller

Nathan officially joined the Folkway sales team in 2022, right after completing his Bachelor of Music degree in Windsor, Ontario. For a handful of years prior, Nathan was busy buying and selling vintage electric guitars all over Southern Ontario while chipping away on his degree, touring in bands, teaching, and working in the musical instrument retail trade in Windsor. He entered our fold after consigning a clean single-cut Les Paul Special with us, and never looked back. Nathan’s interest and knowledge of vintage Fender and Gibson electrics and amplifiers runs deep and is well matched to his skills as a guitarist. He currently tours with Buck Twenty and has crisscrossed Canada a number of times on past tours with a number of bands. His current rig includes a ’56 Les Paul Jr, a restored PAF-equipped 1957 Les Paul Custom, a ‘52 J-45 and a 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb.

Claire studied Photography at Conestoga College and worked out of a home studio for a number of years before becoming Folkway's staff photographer in 2010. She soon became responsible for our website upkeep, ad creation, and online marketing, and today also handles all aspects of Folkway’s business administration and shipping management. She’s become a world expert on international shipping logistics and CITES and is the point of contact for all out-of-town clients awaiting the receipt of instruments purchased from afar. A guitar player and singer with a love for 60’s Rhythm and Blues, Claire makes sure the guitars each get a good little warm-up before their photo shoots to help them look their finest for our website. She’s played every guitar we’ve photographed since 2010, and ‘the one that got away’ was a certain 1954 Gibson SJ that had everything going on. She’s recently taken home a 1964 Danelectro Shorthorn bass and is bringing the funk to her neighbourhood.

Alongside his technical expertise, he has maintained a vibrant career as a singer-songwriter and journeyman musician, touring extensively across Canada via every mode of transport with various pop artists. His deep connection to the shop’s history is anchored by his 1934 0-17, an instrument he purchased from Rich at the original Guelph location. While he cherishes his vintage Martin, Dave currently spends his time pining after a Banner LG-2, a dream he hopes to realize one day soon.

    Richard Burnett

    Richard Burnett

Raised on a healthy diet of Willie Nelson, Ry Cooder, and Neil Young, Richard’s musical heritage dovetails perfectly with Folkway’s aesthetic and focus. He’s been a devoted guitarist since his teenage years and, after spending some time at Toronto’s Humber College music program, moved to Chicago to hone his skills as a musician. Introduced to Folkway in 2006, Richard recalls playing his first ‘great’ guitar at the shop and how that moment instantly hooked him on tone. He began working at the store shortly thereafter and has continually developed his passion for guitar tone and playing technique over these last decades. Today our new and returning clients regularly depend on Richard to help them choose the instrument that’s right for them. His ability to guide a player through the myriad of excellent guitar options we have available is unparalleled. When not at the shop Richard is a professional touring and session musician, instrumentalist, songwriter, and guitar/lap steel side-man. His go-to guitars are a 1935 Gibson L-00, 1952 National Dynamic, and a 1965 Fender Jazzmaster which he plays through a ’66 Fender Princeton Reverb.

Over the Years at Folkway

A brief timeline of Folkway’s history

  1. Mark at Folkway’s first repair bench, Late 1999.

    Mark's First Repair Bench

Mark is biking through downtown Guelph when he spots a commercial space for rent — $600 a month. No business plan, just savings and a loan from his parents. He co-signs the lease with his father, installs a repair bench, gives music lessons, and from day one designs the space with a coffee machine and live music every week. Doors officially open in March of 1999.

    Folkway Gets Its Name

For Mark's 25th birthday, his sister buys him the domain folkwaymusic.com. He soon becomes an authorized repairperson for C.F. Martin & Co. and demand for his brand of high-quality, customer-focused repair work grows rapidly. His honesty, integrity and forthright appraisals become pillars of his business.
  3. The modest beginnings of retail at Folkway.

    The Gibson Gamble

A neighbour wants to sell $90,000 worth of Golden Era Gibsons — a 1934 Jumbo, a J-35, an L-Century, and a pile of others. Mark borrows the money and buys the lot. It takes nearly eight years to sell through them all, but those guitars helped put Folkway on the map and earn Mark a reputation he still carries: "The Gibson Guy".

    Three in the Shop

Folkway has a staff of three repairpeople and is deep into vintage sales. Mark regularly stays up until 2AM scouring eBay for L-00s, J-35s, Martin 00-17s and anything else that looks cool and affordable at that time. Every penny went to buying guitars. The vintage obsession was now tied in deeply with the business model.

    Folkway Gets a Facelift

Within five years, the original 1,000 sq ft store is bursting. A major renovation triples the floor space and adds a dedicated lessons space. More staff are added, and guitars are shipping all over the world. Mark works late into the night restoring vintage guitars for clients and for sale, handles all the website’s photography and copy, replies to every email that comes in, and still answers most of the phone calls. Things are very, very busy.

    Concerts Go Next-level

Live music was a part of Folkway since day 1, but by the 2010s the Store’s reputation as a live music venue was reaching new heights. John Renbourne, Martin Simpson, Pierre Bensusan, Greg Brown, Ruth Moody, Bahamas, Martin Carthy, and so many others enjoy playing to an attentive audience of 80 at the store. Concerts happen monthly and are always at capacity.

    Folkway 2.0 Opens in Waterloo

Folkway Music purchases their Waterloo home in July of 2012, 6 months after signing a 5-year lease in Guelph. The summer and fall are spent remodeling and readying the space for retail, while the repair shop and offices remain at the Guelph Location, along with the well-established lessons program.
