1923 Gibson A2Z
This particular mandolin originally came to us from the family of its original owner. It's a crack-free example with what looks like a 1960's factory refinish and remains in very fine shape -- particularly for an instrument that's coming up on 100 years old. The tuners, tailpiece and bridge base are original, the bridge top is a new Randy Wood reproduction that was installed in our shop about ten years ago. Nut, frets, and truss-rod cover likely were replaced at the same time as the instrument's finish.
A superb sounding A2-Z, with a beguiling warmth, that doesn’t get in the way of the instrument’s chop and cut making it a perfect choice for solo playing. Set-up is very nice as well, and the frets play cleanly despite average wear. The instrument's top shows perfect arch, and the top and back plates appear to have not been modified in thickness during the refinish. There is a minor centerseam separation on the back that has been reglued, and the pickguard is long lost.
