1948 Gibson GA-25

Gibson’s GA-25, introduced in 1947, was their first modern amp of the post-WWII era. It featured a completely new cabinet look with a midcentury modern design, and it was Gibson’s first amplifier to use permanent magnet speakers, rather than the field coil type that were, up to that point, the norm. A 6V6 powered amp designed to yield 15 watts, the GA-25 was built with a 12” and an 8” speaker, which allowed it of offer better high-end response than a 1x12” amp while maintaining that 12” bass capability.

This example is completely original but for recent basic servicing that included fuse and grounding work, new AC cord, and a replacement handle. All original parts are provided. The original Jensen speakers sound fabulous, despite a small puncture in the cone of the 12” that is inaudible. Tubes are original, as are the covering and grills.

An excellent sounding amplifier that has a surprisingly high clean headroom before breaking up quite delightfully at about 7 on the volume knob. The tone control seems to be a bass roll-off, so it sounds best turned all the way down. Humbuckers, and high-output single coils work well with this one.
