1951 Gibson J-185
Introduced in 1951, only to be discontinued seven years later, the J-185 has achieved near mythical status in the vintage guitar world. A total of 918 J-185s were built in that period (sunburst and natural) - far fewer than the 20,000 or so J-45s and J-50s produced during the same years. 918 instruments might sound like a lot, but that number equals about half of the total production of original Sunburst Les Paul Standards. Rare and desirable are two words that most definitely describe the J-185 model. This 1951 model is one of a total of 77 J-185s that were built during its introductory year, according to Gibson shipping totals. All of these first-year 185s shipped within the last three months of 1951.
This J-185 has survived 7 decades phenomenally nicely. It has seen some back braces reglued and its top and back center seams tended to, and it remains otherwise issue-free. The neck reset and refret were done in our shop about 12 years ago, and playability remains perfect.
Take a look at the guitar’s original bridge, Patent Applied For Kluson tuners, and the condition of its original finish. Incredible stuff.
When it comes to tone, there are many who hold that nothing can touch a good 185. These are strong and balanced guitars with life and articulation across the strings, and they remain woody and resonant up the neck. There is a full and present mid-range which adds warmth, and an extra sparkle thanks to the maple back and sides. Add to all that the comfortable body shape and round neck, and you’ll find a guitar that’s pretty difficult to set down if you’re lucky enough to pick one up!
