1954 Gibson SJ
This example was built in 1954 and features scalloped bracing and a small pickguard. In 1955 Gibson adopted a larger pickguard and non-scalloped top braces, both of which had a tightening effect on the tone of the guitars. This SJ is a beautifully responsive and touch-sensitive guitar that takes a light to medium right hand attack really well and puts out a lot of volume. It’s perfectly balanced and has beautiful mids, and sounds great with fresh or tired strings.
Original tuners, frets, and finish; original bridge and bridge plate. Newer bone nut and saddle and pins. The top center seam has been repaired and a top crack along the fingerboard’s edge has been properly dealt with. There are two repaired back cracks, and a number of braces have been reglued over the years. Much of the repairwork pre-dates our tenure with the guitar.
Set-up in our shop with an action measuring 5-6 64ths. Round neck with full carve, 1-11/16” nut width, 24.75” scale.
With original brown and pink hardshell case.
