1957 Gibson L-7C, McCarty
The guitar is nearly faultless but for a small repaired top crack at the bass-side f-hole. There is a small ding in the back of the neck at the 12th fret, and a small amount of playwear in the first position. Original frets, tuners and buttons, nut, bridge, and tailpiece, and original finish throughout. The aftermarket McCarty pickup (properly called a Gibson ‘Finger Rest’ pickup) was installed when the guitar was new.
This guitar has just had its neck reset by Mark Stutman. There’s no trace of the work except for the correct neck angle and perfect playability. The original frets are in good shape and play as cleanly as one could expect. The guitar is set up with Thomastik Jazz Swing .012” flatwounds.
A remarkably good sounding 17” archtop, both acoustically and plugged in, this L-7C scores high marks with everyone who has played it since the repairs were completed a few weeks ago. It offers a round and forward mid-range, full trebles, nice chop, and thick single-note strength.
The neck feel is heavenly, too, with Gibson’s mid 50’s full-feeling C carve, 25.4” long scale, and 1-11/16” nut width.
Carved maple and spruce body with solid tone bar bracing, venetian cutaway, and 3-ply bindings. Bound rosewood fingerboard with split parallelogram inlays on a three-ply maple neck.
With original case, and original case-candy.
