1959 Gibson SJ
With no cracks and no brace repairs, this 1959 Gibson Southern Jumbo is about as perfect a vintage Gibson acoustic as one could realistically hope to find. It’s in stunning condition, completely original but for a new bone saddle made in our shop, offers perfect playability, and sounds like a million bucks. And it’s a 1959, so expect a fabulous neck feel, too.
Original frets and tuners, unbroken finish around the original nut, unmodified original bridge that’s never needed reglueing, no cracks along the pickguard’s margins, not a single brace end that’s ever been loose, original bridge pins and endpin, excellent neck angle, and clean, original finish throughout. The guitar’s flaws are few, if at all. The first frets show a bit of playwear and there’s very minor fingernail wear to the adjacent fretboard, and there are some dings in the finish along the edges of the headstock face. Our repairshop rebuilt the pinholes in the bridgeplate, made the new bone saddle, and set up the guitar with 12-53 strings and 5-7/64ths action.
A lovely sounding SJ, this guitar has the sweetness, clarity, balance, volume and fundamental presence that mid/late ‘50s Gibson acoustics are famous for. It’s a wonderful strummer, songwriting tool, and does fingerstyle better than most large guitars thanks to a touch of compression and pretty sustain.
The neck has a rounded carve and 1-11/16” nut width. First fret neck thickness measures .859”. Scale of 24.75, 2-1/8” string spread at the saddle.
If you’re hunting for the best late-50’s Gibson SJ out there, you’ve found it.
With similarly clean Lifton hardshell case.
