1960 Gretsch 6119 Tennessean

Introduced for the 1959 model year, the Gretsch 6119 Tennessean began its career as the single pickup, dressed down version of the venerable 6120 Chet Atkins Hollowbody. After less than two years, however, the 6119 was completely redesigned into the Tennessean that most of us have come to be familiar with – the thin body, walnut finished, dual HiLo’Tron version that George Harrison made famous.

This early 6119 is largely based on the 6120 and features the same trestle-braced mid-depth single-cut archtop body, maple neck, Gretsch Bigsby tailpiece, and PAF Filter’Tron bridge pickup. This example has an unbound Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with thumbprint inlays (earlier models were built with ebonized maple fingerboards), zero fret, and simple black headstock overlay with pearloid logo.

In excellent condition with original finish throughout, this 6119 has a perfect neck angle, original frets that play well, and a fresh set-up by our shop. The bridge is a modern Gretsch replacement that we’ve carefully fit to the top, and the pickguard is a nicely made reproduction. Beyond that, this guitar is completely original, including its white Gretsch hardshell case (a nice bonus!). The only finish flaw of note is a scar on the top behind the bridge.

Comfortable C/D shaped neck with 1-11/16” nutwidth, 24.75” scale.

The bridge PAF Filter’Tron sounds incredible and is generally all anyone needs (along with the Bigsby, a tape echo, and the right amp) to play the kind of music these guitars were built for!
