1963 Fender Custom Telecaster

Debuting at the NAMM Show in June of 1959, the Telecaster Custom and Esquire Custom were higher-end, visually striking, upgraded versions of their standard blonde-finished counterparts. Featuring a three-tone sunburst finish, bound body, and rosewood fretboard, the Custom line of Telecasters and Esquires were possibly Leo Fender's answer to Gibson's Les Paul guitars, which were built with similar appointments. While early 1960s Telecasters are rare in general, Custom Telecasters from this era are particularly difficult to find.

This example dates to the first half of 1963. Its body is dated December 1962 and the neck was stamped in May 1963. The body features maroon-colored lacquer on its sides, which is specific to 1963 Customs. Examples built before and after ’63 generally featured black sides.

This Custom Telecaster is completely original with the exception of its frets, nut, both pots, and one period-correct replacement tuning machine.

A beautifully aged Fender, this Custom is among the best sounding and looking Telecasters to have come through our shop in memory. The bridge pickup offers rich and full tone with the snap and bite a Tele bridge pickup is famous for. The neck pickup is powerful and delivers all the warmth with great definition and articulation. Pickup DC values are 7.3k and 6.2k.

The neck is wonderfully comfortable - something ’63 Fenders are famous for - and the finish is worn off perfectly, leaving a smooth and fast surface. It measures 0.789" at the 1st fret and 0.981" at the 12th. Weight is 7.2lbs.

All told, this is a beautiful example of one of the most sought-after Telecaster models in the Fender catalogue.
