1964 Gibson Hummingbird
This early 1964 example was built the year Keith’s own Hummingbird left the factory and features a natural-finished top and cherry-finished mahogany back and sides. With exception of the first four frets, it’s completely original - right down to the bridge pins and tuner buttons, and has seen no repair work other than that which was recently completed in our shop by Folkway Music-owner, Mark Stutman. Repairs include gluing various top cracks and loose or cracked brace sections, bridge and pickguard regluing, reinforcement of cracks along the fingerboard extension, and final setup. The repairs are completed to Mark’s high standard and are, as such, minimally invasive and largely hard to detect. The guitar plays perfectly with unworn original frets and new-guitar-like action (we used reclaimed 1964 Gibson fretwire for the partial refret, which rendered the fretwork undetectable). There is very little playwear to the finish apart from a few dings on the neck, and the original finish is in quite excellent condition throughout and without any touch-up or repair. The original tuners and nut have never been off, the bridge is unmodified, and the bridge-pins and endpin are original. The guitar is fitted with its original leather strap and is housed in its original case (which isn’t a Gibson-branded case, typical of many Exported-to-Canada guitars from that period).
Nut width is 1-11/16”, .818” first fret depth, 24.75” scale. Single-line Gold Kluson tuning machines, original truss-rod cover. Rosewood fingerboard and bridge, original engraved pickguard, unmodified bridge and original saddle, original bridge plate.
An excellent sounding guitar with a particularly warm voice, gorgeous bass end roundness, and ceramic saddle sparkle up top. A perfect strummer and singing companion.
And it looks pretty darn great too.
With original hardshell case.
