1966 Martin D-18
Martin was in the process of modernizing their guitars in the mid 1960s, and from 1964 on the company was making fairly significant changes to their instruments year by year. This particular guitar is one from early 1966 and still features 1965 specs. The pickguard and binding are tortoise celluloid, it has a small maple bridge plate and T-bar neck reinforcement, and the bridge has a drop-in saddle.
A crack free guitar that’s very light on playwear, this D-18’s original finish is clean and in great shape. There are two top dings, and one minor impact wound on the guitar’s upper left shoulder, but not much else to report on. The neck has been reset, frets dressed, new bone saddle installed, and the set up finished up with 5-6 64ths action and 12-53 strings.
It’s a very open, bassy, and woody D-18 with a lovely presence and some pretty overtones that don’t usually show up in Martins from this period.
Fast-playing soft V neck carve with compact feel, 1-11/16” nut width, and 25.4” scale.
With period hardshell case
