The CBS era brought about many changes for Fender's Stratocaster model. The introduction of a larger headstock in late 1965, black headstock decal and "F-style" tuners in 1967, and transition to polyester finishes from nitrocellulose in 1967-68 all marked a gradual shift away from the classic Stratocaster specs of the "Pre-CBS" era. The most significant structural shift in the design of the Stratocaster came about in 1971 when Fender moved away from their classic bolt-on neck design that employed 4 screws, opting for a 3-bolt system with an extra set-screw to adjust neck angle. At the same time, Fender's adjustable truss rod was modified to be adjustable at the headstock by use of an allen wrench, as opposed to the classic Phillips screw at the heel. The adjustable end of the truss rod at the headstock resembled a bullet, leading to player's referring to it as the "bullet truss rod." For many collectors, Fender's adoption of the 3-bolt neck and bullet truss rod marks the end of the company's golden era and full transition into CBS manufacturing.
An early 1971 build, this Stratocaster is among the last of its kind to feature the traditional 4-bolt neck joint. It's a wonderfully resonant guitar that sounds incredible when plugged in and it feels great, standing as a testament to the high quality of instruments that were still being produced in the early years of the CBS takeover. The neck is dated to May of 1971 and the potentiometers are dated to the 52nd week of 1970.
This 4-bolt Strat is in largely original condition with the exception of a replaced 3-way switch (original included in case pocket) a new trem arm, and a clean refret with vintage-style wire. The original Sunburst finish shows signs of play wear typical of a fifty-something year old instrument. There is a finish blemish above the pick guard by the neck pickup where something reacted with the poly overcoat. It may have been caused by adhesive from a sticker, but we are unsure. The headstock has a suntan caused by a sticker or piece of tape that has since been removed. The original finish on the neck has a wonderfully worn-in feel that makes the guitar seem older than it is.
Equipped with a trio of original and unmodified pickups that measure 5.7K in the neck position and 5.6K in both the middle and bridge. It’s got the chime in the top end that one expects from a Hendrix-era Strat. The neck has a full D carve that measures 0.881" deep at the first fret and 0.963" at the twelfth with a nut width just shy of 1-5/8". Weighing in at 7lbs 8 oz, this guitar offers a very comfortable playing experience without any of the shoulder pain that later '70s Strats have a tendency to deliver.
