1979 Guild D-40

Serial # 195768. The D-40 was Guild's answer to Martin's D-18, and was a top seller for the company. Like the D-18, the D-40 featured solid mahogany back and sides, spruce top, and a rosewood fingerboard and bridge; but with white bindings, more elaborate rosette and headstock inlays, and a tortoise-celluloid pickguard, Guild's offering one-upped the D-18 in looks.

This late 1970's model is in excellent condition. The guitar is crack-free, and has never seen any repairs other than the set-up we've just finished. There are a number of case-caused dings and some finish craze lines on the guitar's top, but no major wear to speak of. Original frets are not very worn, but they're admittedly not perfectly level after these thirty-something years. The guitar plays well enough though, for most of us, with action set at a standard 5 to 7 64ths at the 12th fret. The saddle is at its low-limit, and we'd recommend shaving the guitar's bridge down a touch if lower action was desired. The guitar is fitted with a passive Barcus Berry bridgeplate transducer which sounds very good.

Classic Guild warmth, with an excellent feel.
