1980 Tokai Breezy Sound

In 1980 the best Fender and Gibson style guitars were arguably being made in Japan. For more than a decade CBS and Norlin respectively controlled Fender and Gibson and had done a marvellous job of downgrading instrument quality in favor of profits. Japanese manufacturers took advantage of this change in the US guitar-making landscape to create a great range of guitar designs that sold well in North America. There was already an interest in the great vintage guitars built by Fender and Gibson, and Tokai, one of Japan’s well established guitar manufacturers, built some of the world’s first vintage-reissues of these 50’s designs.

The Breezy Sound is Tokai’s recreation of an early 50’s Fender Telecaster, and it’s great. This example, built in 1980, features an ash body with see-through blond finish, five-hole black pickguard, one-piece maple neck with vintage frets, tuners, and string tree, and Fender-esque headstock logo. Were it not for its modern 6-saddle bridge the Breezy Sound would fool most anyone from 6 feet out.

The neck shape has a 60’s feel, with a C carve and a medium profile, 1-5/8” nut and vintage radius. The frets are in excellent shape, and the nut is original.

The guitar is in exceptional condition and shows little use. Set up is perfect, wiring is completely original, and the finish is gorgeous. It weighs in at 7.9 lbs.
