2001 Randy Lucas Kenny Smith
Built with forward-shifted scalloped bracing, red-spruce top, South American mahogany back and sides and tortoise celluloid binding, the guitar is very much a pre-war inspired D-18, but with the addition of a style 45 torch headstock inlay, a bound headstock, and a wooden rosette with tasteful red center ring, the instrument is cosmetically unique among D-18 inspired guitars.
The neck is wonderful, and very closely styled after Kenny's original '35. It features a soft V profile that's fairly contemporary in feel in the first position and thickens up nicely in by the 5th fret and beyond. Steel non-adjustable neck support, bound, dotless ebony fingerboard, and 25.5" scale. The nut width is 1-3/4" and the string spread at the bridge is 2-3/8".
An incredibly loud, powerful, open, and responsive dreadnought, the Kenny Smith is among the truest pre-war voiced mahogany D's we've had through the store. It has an incredible headroom, and a bass-end that will consume most banjos. Ok, that's an exaggeration, but you get the picture.
The guitar has a repaired top crack (Repaired by the builder, we've been told) and a few very short (1/2") stress marks on the upper back, but is otherwise in very fine condition. Very light playwear, nice looking finish. Set-up in our shop with flatpicking action and medium strings. Fossil ivory nut, saddle, and pins, Waverly tuning machines.
With deluxe hard shell case
