2017 Waterloo WL-K Southwest

The Waterloo WL-K Southwest features a hand painted American Southwest cactus scene that pays homage to the stenciled ‘cowboy’ guitars of the 1930s. Gibson’s original 1929-31 Kel Kroydon branded guitars, after which the WL-K are styled, was available with a stenciled and painted volcano scene that has a similar feel and palette to the Waterloo Southwest.

This example, built just a few years ago, is a beautifully light guitar with an airy and responsive feel. Collings selects their lightest tonewoods for this particular model, which has a pronounced effect on the particularly open tone of the WL-K.

Mahogany and spruce body with X bracing and single-ply white bindings. Small bridge and matching bridge plate, 12 fret neck with rounded low-C carve and shorter 24-7/8” scale. 1-3/4” nutwidth, 2-3/8 string spread at the bridge.

In near-mint condition, this guitar shows very little playwear apart from few hard-to-find minor impressions on the back. Set-up here at Folkway.
