2020 Oskar Graf 16" Archtop
The 16" figured West Coast maple and European spruce guitar shown here exemplifies all this and then some. From the tonewoods selected to the intricately detailed purflings and lush sunburst lacquer finish, nothing was overlooked in this archtop's build. Gracefully carved, the guitar boasts gorgeously recurved arches and chamfered f-holes. Bound in dark rosewood and tastefully accented in ebony, the guitar's pickguard, bridge, and tailpiece are each hand-carved by Graf. Pickguard mounted ebony-covered Kent Armstrong PAF humbucking pickup and discreet volume and tone controls, gold and ebony Schaller tuners, gold pearl headstock logo inlaid into an ebony headstock overlay that is bordered by a fine gold line.
Graf's archtop guitars are crafted entirely by hand, which affords him the ability to adjust the instrument's voicing to suit the properties of the wood he's using. This guitar has a very open and expressive voice when touched lightly but has ample power and cut in reserve to meet the demands of a heavy attack. Overtones are present but controlled, and treble string response is rounder and fuller than most. Strung with flatwounds this 16” archtop’s amplified tone is quite traditional and smooth with just a touch of grit when leaned into. With acoustic round wound strings the voice of the guitar opens and intensifies, offering an expressive low end and strong fundamental through the mid range.
The neck has rounded carve, 1-23/32” nutwidth, and a 1st fret depth of .850”. The scale is 25.2” and string spread at the saddle measures 2-1/8”.
In near-perfect condition and recently set up, this Oskar Graf archtop presents as a nearly new guitar. There is no fretwear nor playwear of any note.
