Apart from the Tricone models, vintage Nationals with square necks are relatively scarce guitars. Most single-cone instruments that National made in the 1930s were equipped with round necks and a Spanish-style set up. In 25 years we’ve had a square-neck Duolian, and now this square-neck Style O come through the store, but no other square neck Nationals that weren’t tricones.
This 1936 National Style O Square Neck features the same 14 fret brass body and chicken-foot coverplate as the round-neck version that so famously emblazoned the cover of Brothers in Arms by the Dire Straits. The only difference between Knopfler’s Style O and this one is the shape of the neck.
In excellent condition, this 90 year old National has survived beautifully with only a replaced biscuit to show for it. The original biscuit was removed as the saddle was too low for sufficient break angle; it’s in the case pocket now. The original cone remains in very good condition and it sounds great.
Square mahogany neck with bound ebony fretboard, paddle-style headstock with engraved National logo, original National/Waverly strip tuners. Set up with a nut riser and open G tuning.
With non-original hardshell case.
The National Reso-Phonic Triolian Steel is a recreation of the company’s first Polychrome Yellow steel-bodied Triolian model built in the early 1930s. Like those originals, the new Triolian features a Hawaiian sunset theme on the instrument’s back, baked yellow finish, a 12 fret body with f-holes, and an Ivoroid-bound fretboard. We’ve ordered ours with a 30’s style National Shield logo, which really completes the vintage-look well.
The classic Blues guitar, the National Triolian Steel 12-fret models are plenty loud, and can be as brash or as pretty as you’d like, depending entirely on the players right hand attack. Set up for hybrid slide/fingerstyle playing this model comes from the factory with slightly higher action at the nut, but can easily be adjusted for standard (no slide) playing.
V-carved neck with 1-3/4” nut width, 25” scale, 2-5/16” string spread at the bridge. The 1st fret neck depth is .943”.
With National hardshell case.
This 14 fret Brazilian rosewood Size 0 flat top built by Pre-War Guitars was imported into Canada – with full CITES permits – by us a few years ago. The guitar remains in perfect condition and shows very little playwear. It was built with level 1 aging, and presents as new-old-stock, with gently crazed finish and only the slightest mechanical wear. Set up with 12s and low fingerstyle action, the Pre-War 0 Brazilian is the perfect recreation of the 1930s Martin that never was: a 14 fret 0-28.
CITES Brazilian rosewood back and sides, Adirondack red spruce top with scalloped bracing, 30’s neck design, with soft V carve, 1-3/4” nut width, 2-5/16” string spread at the bridge, and 24.9” scale. Bone nut and saddle, Waverly tuning machines, mid-sheen lacquer finish. The neck depth at the 1st fret measures .878”
Like all Pre-War guitars, this rosewood 0-sized beauty has a dark, smoky, old voice and sounds much older than it is. It’s responsive, and offers a string balance that favours its upper mids and trebles, and fills the low register with an articulate and clean bass that is disproportionate to the size of the guitar.
With original hardshell case and CITES import documentation.
The RainSong Black Ice BI-WS1000NZ is a 15-3/4” wide full-depth cutaway acoustic that’s entirely constructed of graphite and thereby immune to the destructive forces expansion and contraction bring to wooden guitars. Perfect for travel to humid, arid, hot, or cold places, the RainSong’s set-up and playability are unaffected by the weather and humidity extremes that would ruin a conventional guitar.
This example is in excellent condition and shows only slight playwear to the back’s finish and a nick to the back of the headstock. The frets are largely unworn and the setup is excellent.
The neck has a comfortably rounded D carve, 1-11/16” nut, first fret depth of .852”, and a 25.4” scale. String spread at the saddle is 2-5/16”.
The Black Ice has a unique tone that is impossible to speak of in wooden guitar terms. The top is layered graphite and made without bracing, so resonance is created in a very different way. The guitar has a dark voice with mid-range response that peaks at certain frequencies more than others. There is plenty of harmonic development as well. String balance is quite even, and the guitar responds best to a light to medium attack.
With original case.
Santa Cruz builds their 12 fret dreadnoughts with an ear towards string balance, fundamental presence and clarity, and a bass-end response that doesn’t absorb all of the guitar’s energy at the cost of mid-range and treble power. Anyone who appreciates a big-bodied guitar that offers balance, power, and huge headroom along with the warmth and bass response of a typical D would be remiss not to try this guitar out. It’s a remarkable sounding machine that offers flatpickers everything they want, but also offers the warmth and overtone richness demanded by fingerstyle players.
Beyond the red spruce scalloped bracing and hide-glue construction, this Santa Cruz D-12 is built with a slightly thinner body with a depth of 4-3/8” at the endpin and a 1” taper, and a soundhole diameter that’s increased to 4-1/4”. These are two of the less obvious secrets to this guitar’s incredible tone.
The two-piece bookmatched maple neck has a wonderfully comfortable rounded C-carve of medium depth and a nutwidth of 1-3/4”. First fret neck thickness measures .854”, and thickness at the 9th fret is .955”. The scale is 25.4” and the string spread at the bridge is 2-3/16. All those numbers add up to a neck that feels nothing like most 12-fretters out there. It’s much more of a Gibson-like rounded carve with a nicely rolled fretboard edge. The closest-feeling neck to this one would be a ’29 to ’32 L-00 / L2 / Nick Lucas variant with a full-thickness fretboard. The ivoroid-bound ebony fingerboard is dressed up with slotted diamond inlays, and the ivoroid-bound ebony headstock overlay features a pearl SCGC logo. Schaller open-geared tuners and a properly-adjusted bone nut offer smooth and predicable tuning. The guitar is set up with 12’s and standard 5-6 64ths action. It remains in excellent condition with very little playwear.
With original Ameritage hardshell case
