1935 Gibson TG-00

Tuned in 5ths and strung to low G like an octave mandolin, this mid 1930’s Gibson TG-00 offers a new musical experience to all of us 6-string guitar players. Tenor guitars are traditionally tuned CGDA, or sometimes DGBE like the top 4 strings of a guitar, but the lower G tuning imparts a darkness and expressive character that (we feel) really brings out the best the tenor guitar has to offer.

This 1935 TG-00 features the familiar body of Gibson’s L-00, complete with the same X bracing, sunburst finish, and single-bound top, but features a 4 string neck with 22-3/4” scale, slighty radiused fingerboard, banjo tuners, and tiny 4 string bridge. The nut width measures 1-3/16”.

In very good condition and largely all original, this instrument has a few repaired back cracks, a reglued and reinforced top center seam, and glued and reinforced cracks on either side of the fingerboard extension. The set up was completed here at Folkway, and the action is currently set to 5-6 64ths at the 12th fret. The original frets show some wear in the first position but are largely in good shape. Full height saddle and bridge, original finish throughout with very localized touch-up at the back cracks.

With 50’s Chipboard case.
