1957 Magnatone Custom 260

The Magnatone Custom 260 is arguably the most iconic "True Vibrato" amplifier of the 1950s, defining a sound that was lightyears ahead of the standard tremolo found in contemporary Gibsons or Fenders. While the larger 280 and 290 models followed, the 260 was the quintessential mid-sized pro amp, featuring the legendary pitch-shifting vibrato circuit. Driven by two 12" Oxford speakers, its signature watery, ethereal warble became a staple for guitarists like Lonnie Mack and Motown session guitarist, Robert Ward, who used its unique spatial character to bridge the gap between gospel, soul, and early rock. It remains a benchmark for lush, three-dimensional tone that feels less like an effect and more like a living part of the amp's voice.

This 260 is a first-year example made in the Inglewood factory and features the front overhang cab design. It offers about 35 watts with 6L6GB tubes. Apart from a replaced power transformer, three-prong cord, and handle, the amp is original and remains in gorgeous condition.

An amplifier that needs to be played to ‘get’ this Magnatone Custom 260 is seriously special.
