1960 Fender Stratocaster Lefty
Original finish throughout, original pickguard, shielding plate, pots, bridge, control knobs, jack cup, neck plate, screws and two of three pickups. The neck pickup is a black bobbin original Fender Strat pickup from the same era, but likely is not original to the guitar. It has right-handed pole piece stagger and a slightly higher DC Resistance (6.0 vs 5.6 and 5.7). We suspect it was changed for Doyle as he plays lefty-strung-righty. The neck is dated 10/61, suggesting it might have been changed out at some point as well. It’s an original 1961-dated lefty Fender Slab-board neck with original tuners and finish, so things could be worse! The switch is a modern 5 way, and there has been some clean solder repair under the hood. Finally, there are little bits of masking tape with LH scribbled on them in various locations under the pickguard and on the trem block that were there to remind Fender employees to build and wire the guitar lefty. The two original lefty-staggered pickups also have masking tape markings on their under-side, under the potting.
The frets and nut have been replaced, there’s a strap-button hole on the treble (righty) horn, and the finish on the back of the neck barrel is all but gone. There’s plenty of wear to the body finish, a crack in the pickguard by the neck pickup mounting screw, and the backplate is long gone. The current frets are Dunlop 6105. They’re dressed fairly well and the guitar plays easily and cleanly. Set-up was done here at Folkway with 10-46 strings and a flat trem.
With modern hardshell case, with Doyle’s name on tape affixed to the top.
