1968-69 Gibson Flying V

Serial # 966965. Gibson built a total of 98 Flying V's before hangering the model in ’59. The guitar didn’t gain the popular acceptance Gibson was hoping for; but even so, 98 of them wasn’t near enough to go around! The V was reintroduced in 1966 and built in very limited numbers for the next few years. It wouldn’t be until 1975 that the model’s production would ramp up to any significant numbers. This example dates from the late 1960’s, perhaps ’68 or ’69, but that’s as accurate as we can get. The serial number suggests 1968, the pot codes date to early 1966 (137-6607), and the headstock volute and certain construction details point to 1969. Further dating is made difficult thanks to a headstock repair and finish touch-up, and repairs to the pickups and wiring. Here’s an itemized description of the guitar: Lightweight mahogany body with splined center joint, 3 piece mahogany neck, factory original natural finish, original white pickguard, Indian rosewood fingerboard, natural-finish headstock, original Gibson Deluxe tuners. There is overspray on the headstock (front and rear) that extends down the neck to approximately the 6th fret, the balance of the guitar’s finish is unmodified. Nut and frets are newer, original patent number pickups, but the covers have been off and there are repairs to a number solder joints. Original bridge, tailpiece, and plastic parts. The guitar plays very well with frets that are in excellent condition and an in-shop set-up. Very comfortable rounded neck profile with a nut-width of 1-5/8”. Quite light in weight at 6.5 Lbs; pickup DC resistances of 7.5 and 7.8 (neck, bridge). Resonant and lively, this one has a perfect balance of bite and warmth. With original hard shell case
