1973 Gibson ES-335TDW

Gibson introduced the walnut finish option on their ES-335TD in 1970, and then watched it quickly outsell their more dated cherry and sunburst models over that decade. Everything walnut sold well in the 1970s – from salad bowls to furniture, and the walnut-finished models Gibson offered during those years were the right guitars for the times.

This guitar, built in 1973, is a gorgeous example of and early ‘70s ES-335TD, and is in fabulous condition. The original finish shows very little wear, the electronics are factory original and untouched, there’s no funny business with the headstock, neck joint, neck angle, or tailpiece, and the playability remains very good despite the low/flat crown of the original frets. The nut is a bone replacement, and we’ve installed a Tone Pros bridge and a set of lightly aged double-ring Kluson replacement tuners. The guitar is otherwise completely original. The original bridge is in the case pocket along with the original tuners (two of which are non-functional).

Typically compact neck carve, with a nut width of 1-9/16”, and a depth of .08” at the 1st fret that tapers nicely to .91” at the 12th. The pickups are patent number decal humbuckers with DC values of 7.7k (neck) and 7.8k (bridge). The one visible pot code dates to 1973, but the week is obscured by solder. The guitar weighs 7.5lbs.
