1986 Fylde Falstaff

Roger Bucknall has been crafting fretted instruments for the better part of 50 years. His guitars and mandolins of various sizes have been companions to a who’s who list of musicians throughout the British folk revival and to the present.

This Fylde Falstaff is a one-owner instrument that was purchased new from Roger in 1986. Its owner emigrated to Canada some years later, and now, nearly 40 years since being built, it has landed at Folkway. The Falstaff remains in Fylde’s current catalog and is largely unchanged in specs. It features a uniquely shaped body that is sized somewhere between a Dreadnought and and OM. 15.5” wide at the lower bout, a wider waist than an OM, and a depth of 4.5” or so at the end pin with only a half-inch of body taper to the neck heel. The back and sides are rosewood, and the top is spruce. Mahogany bindings, three-ring rosette, ebony fretboard and bridge, and 25.5” scale. The neck has comfortably rounded softened V carve, 1-3/4” nut width, and a depth of .940” at the first fret. The scale length is 25.5”, and the string spread at the bridge is 2-5/16” similar to a 1930’s Martin.

A crack-free guitar that has survived well, its only repair is a filled-in jack hole on its lower treble side. The finish shows some playwear, but less than most, and the setup and neck angle are good. A K&K Pure pickup has been installed.
