Taking heavy inspiration from the L-00s built before WWII, the Atkin L36 features many vintage-style appointments, the familiar 14-3/4 00-sized body outline, mahogany and spruce body, and a short 24-7/8” scale neck. Despite being braced differently than a 1930s L-00, the Atkin Thirty Six sounds remarkably similar to the guitars that inspired it; albeit newer. The mids are forward and punchy, it’s quick and responsive (or “bouncy,” as Atkin describes it on their website), the basses are nicely articulated and clean without being tight, and the trebles are bold and balanced. We can say with confidence that the Atkin L36’s voice is the closest approximation of a vintage L-00 that we’ve yet found in a modern guitar.

This example was ordered with an attractive black-top finish that’s mated to Kalamazoo brown back, sides, and neck. The gloss finish isn’t mechanically aged but shows fine crazing throughout as per Atkin guitar’s finish recipe. The firestripe pickguard is backlit and pronounced, the bindings are color-aged appropriately, the tuners are aged Klusons, and the fretboard and bridge have been upgraded to Indian rosewood for tone and looks.

The guitar’s neck has a rounded and deep 1950s feel with a 1-11/16” nut and 1st fret depth of .887”. String spread at the bridge is 2-3/16”.

Mahogany back and sides, torrefied Sitka spruce top with scalloped torrefied European red spruce bracing. Bone nut and saddle.

With Atkin-branded hardshell case.
