Making its debut in 1949, the ES-175 holds the distinction of being Gibson's first Florentine cutaway electric model. While initially made available exclusively in a single-pickup configuration, a two-pickup version of the model, the ES-175D, was launched in 1953. The ES-175 was offered in both Sunburst and Natural finishes, with examples of the former shipping in far greater numbers. Of the roughly 400 ES-175D guitars recorded to have shipped in 1954, approximately 125 featured a natural lacquer finish like the one offered here.
A clean and largely original ES-175DN from the model's second year of production, this 1954 build presents beautifully. The well-preserved blond finish shows light crazing and a handful of minor chips and dents throughout. The guitar is completely original but for a refret, new nut, and a small section of replaced binding on the bass-side fingerboard extension. Both P-90 pickups and electronics are original and unmodified. Several small cracks at the output jack have been repaired and are stable.
A remarkably good-sounding guitar, this P-90 equipped ES-175D delivers a beautifully rich and clear response in the bridge position, a warm and creamy voice in the neck, and a nicely articulated tone in the middle. Both pickups offer lots of power and punch, and push the front end of a tube amplifier perfectly. The full-hollow construction imparts an airy and open quality to the guitar's amplified voice. While these guitars are often associated with jazz, this 1954 Gibson ES-175DN is an incredible blues or rock guitar when played through a pushed tube amp. The guitar's classic rounded '50s neck carve is heavenly, making this ES-175 a joy to play.
